Used Cars – How I save money

Used Cars: My Partners in Crime

I’m a college student who runs a small landscaping company in the summer. It’s really local, basically I just do yard work for my neighbors. Sometimes I continue into the winter and do some snow removal when I’m home on break. I’ll even come home on a weekend if I know that it’s going to snow because I can clear a lot of sidewalks and driveways with the snow blower I bought last year. That money pretty much gets me through until spring.

Anyway, when I first got the idea to start the business, I knew I would need a vehicle. A truck, really. But since I was just starting out, I didn’t have much money. I was at the end of my senior year in high school at the time and had birthday money and graduation money. Obviously, I was going to need to look at used cars to start out.

My dad took me to a few used car dealerships and it didn’t take me long to find a truck that was perfect. It has some miles on it but I wasn’t going to be taking it very far, just around the neighborhood. I just needed something to haul my supplies from place to place. I was really shocked at how easy it was to find a decent truck and a salesperson who didn’t make me feel like he was trying to take advantage of me.

That first summer was a really successful one for me. So much so that I’d saved up enough to buy a second truck. See, I wanted a vehicle to take to school with me and didn’t want to put the miles on my work truck if I didn’t have to. So, I was soon out looking at used cars for sale again. I found an awesome truck with a lot fewer miles on it than my first one. I went to the same dealership and salesman because I’d been so impressed with him the first time.

I started the summer with zero trucks and no business and, in only 3 short months, I’d been successful enough to buy 2 trucks. The following summer, I earned enough to upgrade my work truck and found yet another truck at the same used car dealership in mississauga by my parents’ house. I know some people look down on buying a used car. But I built a successful business with mine.
